Salvage Crew Raises Scuba Diving Boat That Burned, Sank Off CA Coast

A salvage crew on Thursday raised the dive boat which caught fire and sank off the Southern California last week killing 33 passengers and one crewmember.

A barge equipped with a crane pulled charred hull of the Conception to the surface near Santa Cruz Island. The boat will be inspected by investigators on shore.

At the same time, the National Transportation Safety Board just released a preliminary report saying all six crewmembers were asleep when the flames broke out September 2. The law requires someone to be on watch overnight in situations like this one.

A representative for the NTSB says only three members of the surviving crew were interviewed before the Coast Guard requested that the last two interviews be delayed until while their investigation continues.

Santa Barbara County sheriff's officials are still working on the process of identifying the victims. Many of the bodies are said to have been so severely burned that DNA testing has been required to establish identity.
