FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State women's basketball earns their second win of the season after a double digit win over UC Riverside at the Save Mart Center on Monday night, 63-53.
Bulldogs were once again led by junior Mia Jacobs. The 6-2 forward had herself a statement game knocking in her 500th point as a Bulldog and her third straight double-double with 21 points and a new career-high 15 rebounds. In addition, the 'Dogs saw heavy aid from Saga Ukkonen with 10 points, six rebounds, three steals and Kylee Fox with 17 points.
How it happened
Bulldogs opened on slow footing with two made baskets through the first five minutes. Saga Ukkonen launched a shot beyond the arc to tie it up, 5-5. Mia Jacobs matched Ukkonen with another three-pointer just a minute later.
In true Kylee Fox fashion, her first points of the night came from a long range shot to start the second.
A two point lead held the 'Dogs over the Highlanders going into the half. Highlanders' kept pushing to break a near ten point lead. UCR's Rose was good for three to make it a one-point game with 5:08 to go. Bulldogs closed on a 4-2 run to hold a three point lead going into the half. Both teams matched even in the second quarter, with each scoring eleven points.
Ukkonen started the Bulldogs' best scoring run off a deep three. Followed by Jacobs (2-2) plus a fast break layup, off a steal then assisted by Taija Sta. Maria.
A trip to the line secures Jacobs with her 500th point in a Bulldog uniform in the first five of the second half. Fresno State's largest lead of the night was at the hands of Jacobs, good for 2-2 at the foul line. Highlanders' Matarranz chipped it down by two with less than thirty seconds to go in regulation.
