'Dogs open spring schedule in Arizona

FRESNO, Calif. — The Fresno State men's golf team will open its spring schedule at the Arizona N.I.T. at Omni Tucson National, hosted by No. 16 Arizona in Tucson, Ariz., Jan. 29-30.

The 18-team field will play 36 holes on Monday with the final round being played on Tuesday on the 7,200-yard, par-72 Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National.

THE FIELD

Fresno State will face No. 16 Arizona, No. 4 Arizona State, BYU, Iowa State, (RV) LMU, Missouri, (RV) New Mexico, New Mexico State, San Diego, Santa Clara, (RV) SMU, St. Mary's, Stanford, TCU, No. 24 Texas A&M, West Virginia and Wyoming.

THE SCHEDULE

Monday, Jan. 29 — 36 holes, shotgun start at 7:30 AM PT

Tuesday, Jan. 30 — 18 holes, shotgun start at 7:30 AM PT

THE LINEUP

Matthew Sutherland — 67.25 scoring average

Matthew Manganello — 69.5 scoring average

Joseph Lloyd — 69.5 scoring average

Ryan Firpo — 71 scoring average

Andrew Lee — 71.3 scoring average

FALL HIGHLIGHTS

Fresno State had three Top 5 finishes.

Fresno State scored a program-low one-round low score of 263 at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, surpassing the previous low of 266.

Matthew Manganello tied the program record for lowest round vs. par with a 9-under 62 at the Nick Watney Invitational.

Joseph Lloyd tied the program record for lowest 54-hole record versus par with a 17-under 196 at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate.

Matthew Sutherland had three Top 5 tournament finishes.

LAST TIME OUT

Fresno State wrapped up the fall season with a fifth-place finish at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational. The Bulldogs carded a 23-under-par 841.

Matthew Sutherland tied for fourth among the 99-player field after scoring a 6-under 66 in the final round, chalking five birdies and an eagle down the stretch. Sutherland led the squad with a tournament score of 12-under 204, marking his third-lowest tournament score this season for his third Top 5 finish.

Joseph Lloyd, Ryan Firpo and Matthew Manganello went 1-under-par in the final round.

Lloyd recorded his second-lowest tournament score of the season with a 6-under 210. The junior tied for 15th, his second Top 15 finish of the season.

MANGANELLO'S MONSTER ROUND

Senior Matthew Manganello had a career-low round at the Nick Watney Invitational recording a 9-under 62, tying the program record for lowest round vs. par. He had seven birdies and one eagle in the third round.

Manganello finished the tournament with a team-best 10-under 203, tying his career-low. He finished sixth overall in the tournament.

IT WAS A SUTHERLAND SUMMER

Matthew Sutherland had an eventful summer bringing some hardware back to the Valley. The senior won the Sacramento City Amateur and the 99th California State Fair Amateur.

Sutherland qualified for the U.S. Amateur for the second consecutive year, where he became the first Bulldog to advance to the final 16 since 2009.
