FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State volleyball team claimed redemption over CSUN with a 3-2 win over the Matadors in the home opener at the Save Mart Center on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State and CSUN continued the trend of Wednesday's match by keeping the first set close. The Bulldogs trailed preceding a CSUN time out near the end of the set. Grace Doyle and Jenna Legault added three kills to the total to get the 'Dogs within two before falling 25-22.
Fresno State found new life in the second set, leading by as much as 10 over CSUN. The Bulldogs claimed the set 25-16, tallying 14 kills and four service aces. Set three started with back-and-forth scoring, staying within two until a pair of blocks from Kasey Purry and Addison Haluska and a service ace from Brooke Cowie put the 'Dogs on top, 25-17.
CSUN picked up the offense in the fourth set and held the lead throughout, winning the match 25-19 and sending both teams to set 5.
Fresno State returned the favor and held on tight to the lead in the final set, never allowing the Matadors to get ahead before defeating CSUN 16-14 in a nail-biter finish to give the Bulldogs their first home victory in 2023.
NOTES
Graduate student Grace Doyle had a career game as she went up for a career-high 23 kills and 27.5 points scored for the 'Dogs.
Brooke Cowie also chalked up a double-double tonight with a career-high 47 assists, in addition to claiming 10 digs and two service aces.
Addison Haluska also earned a double-double tonight with career-highs in both kills (18) and digs (12).
