California Assembly Members Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento) and Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher (D-San Diego) are proposing legislation at the Capitol to ban youth tackle football for kids in California until high school. In a statement Asm. Gonzalez Fletcher says "The science is clear: head injuries sustained at a young age can harm kids for the rest of their lives."
Illinois and New York have considered youth tackle football bans in their states as well. And the evidence linking football to long-term brain damage have increased in the recent years, most notably due to the work and discovery of CTE by Dr. Bennet Omalu. Not to mention some of the tragic suicides by NFL players like Junior Seau or Dave Deurson, who were later discovered to be suffering from CTE.
Knowing what you know now, would you let your kids play football youth tackle football? How about playing football altogether, even in high school?
