Sacramento Bill Could Allow Bicyclists To Roll Through Stop Signs

Don't bother stopping -- just yield at the stop sign -- if you're peddling a bike in California.

That's the intent of a bill now under consideration in Sacramento that would allow bicyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs. Supporters believe the new rules would be safer for cyclists, who could get through intersections much faster. But opponents say it sends the wrong message, teaching bike riders not to obey or respect stop signs.

According to The Sacramento Bee, a study looked at vehicle-versus-bicycle collisions 30 months before and 30 months after the law passed. It found that there were zero cyclists killed in a fatal crash at a stop sign-controlled intersection and a 23% reduction in injury crashes at intersections.

Assembly Bill 122 has already passed the state Assembly and now heads to the Senate.
