California State University is paying nearly $40 million to a former student who suffered from heat stroke during an exercise class.
Marissa Freeman sued the university because she now has a brain injury and needs full-time care. She collapsed during a five kilometer run in hot weather back in September of 2018. In addition to the settlement, Cal State has also agreed to implement heat illness prevention training and protocols for its 23 campuses.
