Berkeley Bans Checkout Stand Junk Food

The city of Berkeley is banning junk food at checkout stands in stores. The City Council approved the first healthy checkout policy in the nation this week, and Vice-Mayor Sophie Hahn says it just means customers will need to go looking for candy instead of having it within arm's reach as they checkout.

The Berkeley ban will begin next March, and will affect stores larger than 2,500 square feet. Instead of candy and soda you'll see healthier snacks, like sugar-free gum, nuts, or milk at 25 stores throughout the city. That includes Safeway, CVS, and Walgreens. However, enforcement of the new ordnance won’t take place until January 1, 2022.
