230,000 Californians Apply For Unemployment Insurance

The current unemployment numbers show that California is still reeling from the COVID-19 induced economic downturn. The Labor Department reports that 230,000 residents in the state applied for jobless benefits. Economists say because travel and tourist dollars have essentially dried up during the pandemic, which is a big reason California is being hit especially hard.

Right now, California accounts for over a quarter of America's unemployment claims.

The latest numbers come just days after a strike team assembled by Governor Gavin Newsom released showing that last month the state's Employment Development Department received an average of 60,000 electronic claims each day. The report also also shows that the backlog of unemployment claims will continue to grow.

EDD has stopped accepting new unemployment claims for a two week period to finally make a dent in that backlog. Governor Newsom had previously directed the redeployment of employees from some other state departments to assist EDD in answering calls and processing claims. That effort failed to solve the problem created by the closure of the state's economy.
