Poll Shows Democrats Think White Male Candidate Most Likely To Beat Trump

A new poll shows that Democrats are willing to sacrifice diversity to get a presidential candidate capable of beating Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

Despite a field of potential Democratic candidates populated by women, people of color, and millennials, 56 percent of people participating in the USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times national poll who were asked to design a generic nominee they think would have the best chance of winning the White House in the upcoming election picked a "white man" between 41 and 65 years. Only 12 percent chose a white woman, 11 percent favored an African-American woman, eight percent pinned their hopes on an African-American man, while Latino women and men were selected as the ideal candidate six and four percent of the time respectively.

Poll respondents were asked to assume that all the candidate choices were otherwise equally qualified the presidency.

The poll could be considered good news for the current Democratic presidential front-runner, Vice President Joe Biden, and the candidate polling right behind him, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Both men are not only white but are also in their 70s. It's not such good news for senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Kamala Harris of California.

The internet survey was conducted May 15th through June 15th by the Understanding America Study at USC Dornsife Center for Economic and Social Research and has a margin of error of plus or minus three percent.
