Yes, California Gas Prices Are High But Heading Down

California's gasoline prices are by far the highest in the country, but they have gone down a little, just ahead of the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The Triple-A statewide average is $4.02-a-gallon, four-cents lower than last week at this time but 30-cents higher than Memorial Day weekend of 2018.

The national average is $2.84-per-gallon, and that is 12-cents less than this time last year. Compare that to California prices that run from $3.89 in Tuolomne County to $4.80 in neighboring Mono County. Triple-A reports the Sacramento region's average for regular unleaded is $3.99-per-gallon, and GasBuddy shows prices as low as $3.39 a gallon in Sacramento.

Hawaii is right behind California with an average of $3.65-a-gallon, according to the Triple-A survey. Washington is third highest on the list at $3.54 on average.

The cheapest gas can be found in the South. Lousiana and Alabama are tied for the lowest average at $2.45-a-gallon, with Mississippi just four-tenths-of-a-cent higher.
