Bill Moving Through CA Legislature Would Allow Payments For College Players

Student athletes could make money while playing college sports if a bill making that the law continues move through the California Legislature.

Senate Bill 206 from State Senator Nancy Skinner from Berkeley is also known as "The Fair Pay to Play Act", and it would allow athletes at University of California and California State University schools to hire agents and accept paid endorsements. It passed the State Senate and now heads to the State Assembly.

If the bills is approved in the Assembly and signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom, it could create a conflict between the state's universities and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Right now the NCAA only allows students in college to get money for tuition, school fees, room and board and a small cost-of-living stipend. Opponents say the decision could get California schools kicked out of the NCAA.

Skinner and supporters of the bill think allowing students to share in the profits enjoyed by the NCAA and big colleges would encourage athletes to stay in school instead of quickly turning professional.
