State Senator From San Francisco Proposes Sex Worker Protections

California legislators are considering a bill that would protect sex workers from arrest. Senator Scott Wiener 's proposed legislation would mirror policies established by the City of San Francisco last year which prevent law enforcement from arresting sex workers for prostitution or petty drug crimes if they come forward to report an assault or other violent crime. The bill would also stop police from arresting sex workers simply for possessing multiple condoms.

Wiener says "violent men often target sex workers as they know they are less likely to be brought to justice." He also tells the Chronicle that he expects opposition from conservative groups, but he insists the bill is good policy that will protect public health and safety.
