President Trump Says He's Preparing New Social Distancing Guidelines

US-HEALTH-VIRUS-BRIEFING

President Donald Trump sent a letter to the nation's governors, telling them that his administration is working on new social distancing guidelines to help get people back to work amid the global coronavirus pandemic.

President Trump said that as testing continues to expand, it will allow officials to identify "high-risk, medium risk and low-risk" counties across the country. With that information, authorities will be able to create specific plans for each county, allowing them to lift statewide restrictions in some areas while maintaining or increasing social distancing measures in others.

"With each passing day, our increasingly extensive testing capabilities are giving us a better understanding of the virus and its path," Trump wrote. "As testing gives us more information about who has been infected, we are tracking the virus and isolating it to prevent further spread. This new information will drive the next phase in our war against this invisible enemy."

Trump is hoping to get most of the country reopened by Easter Sunday, which falls on April 12. While he is optimistic that the goal can be met, many health experts caution that easing restrictions too soon could increase the spread of the coronavirus and make the pandemic worse.
