'Dogs fall in game one to Wolf Pack

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team dropped game one to Nevada 12-0 in five innings on Saturday afternoon at Margie Wright Diamond.

The Bulldogs (24-13, 8-4 MW) were outhit 11-4 in the contest. The four hits came from four different players. Two pitchers saw time in the circle, Hannah Ortega chalked the start and Hannah Duncan came in relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Nevada took a 4-0 lead in the first inning. The leadoff batter singled to reach base, then advanced to third on a stolen base and a passed ball. A walk put runners on the corners, and a sacrifice fly brought in the first run. Another walk loaded the bases, and a three-run home run cleared them.

The Wolf Pack added three more runs in the following inning. The inning began with a leadoff walk, and the runner advanced to third on a bunt single. The runner at first stole second, and a throwing error by the Bulldogs' catcher allowed the runner at third to score. The next batter also laid down a bunt single, and a throwing error by the first baseman plated another run. After the runner at first stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly drove in the third run.

Nevada extended its lead to 10-0 with three runs in the third inning. After the first two batters were retired, a two-out rally ensued, resulting in three consecutive hits.

The final two runs were scored by the Wolf Pack in the fifth inning with a two-out home run.

Fresno State tallied two hits in the bottom of the frame, but were unable to score to extend the game, and it ended in run-rule fashion.
