FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team lost a tight 3-1 game to Nevada on Sunday at Margie Wright Diamond.
The Bulldogs (24-14, 8-5 MW) recorded five hits in the contest. Junior Natalie Elias tied her season-high with three hits. Two pitchers saw action in the circle. Serayah Neiss started and pitched 5.0 innings, while Key-annah Campbell-Pu'a came in relief. Campbell-Pu'a falls to 6-7 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Emma Martinez was hit by a pitch to reach base. Madison Rey followed with a double down the left-field line, but it was ruled a foul ball. Rey returned to the plate and smacked another double to center field, bringing Martinez home.
Nevada tied the game in the fourth inning. The leadoff batter doubled to center field, and a fly out moved her to third. The next batter hit a sacrifice fly to left field, tying the game 1-1.
The Wolf Pack took the lead in the top of the sixth inning, scoring two runs on four hits. The inning began with back-to-back triples, driving in the first run, followed by a double that brought in the second. Nevada held a 3-1 lead as they entered the bottom of the inning.
Kennedy Bunker drew a leadoff walk. Ava Tingey entered the game as a pinch runner and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tingey moved to third on groundout. With a runner on third and two outs, the Wolf Pack's pitcher dealt a strikeout to end the inning.
Nevada had a leadoff single to start the seventh, but Bunker threw out her second runner of the game to erase the base runner. Campbell-Pu'a and the defense retired the next two batters.
With one chance left, Marissa Montelongo hit a one-out single to the short stop.Natalie Elias followed with another infield single. Fresno State had two runners on and one out. The next two batters were retired with fly outs, ending the game.
