Gaels top Bulldogs, 6-1

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team dropped their opening game of the Bulldog Classic to Saint Mary's, losing 6-1 on Friday night at Margie Wright Diamond.

The Gaels (9-10) outpaced the Bulldogs (9-9) in hits, 8-3, marking the fourth time this season Fresno State has been limited to three or fewer hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Saint Mary's wasted no time taking a 1-0 lead. A leadoff double was followed by a sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch brought across the game's opening run.

With Fresno State held to just one hit through the first two innings, Saint Mary's tacked on two more in the third. A single followed by a one-out double, and an error brought the first in. Then the Gaels scored their second of the game off a wild pitch to go up 3-0.

Rylee Bocchini led off the bottom half of the inning with a single for the 'Dogs. A sacrifice bunt then put pinch runner Ava Tingey on second. Emma Martinez drove in the Bulldogs' first run of the evening with a two-out double lined over the head of the first baseman.

The Gaels answered in the top of the fourth with a two-out double to the left field wall to regain their three-run lead.

Fresno State was held without a hit over the final four innings while Saint Mary's added two more in the top of the seventh off a two-out single with the bases loaded.
