ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Fresno State saw a pair of program records fall on Saturday in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the Don Kirby Invitational. The first, was a mere formality as Ceonna Pipion continued to push her time in the 400 meters further out of reach for others, but the other came at the end of the day in the 4x400 relay.
Getting closer and closer in the last month to the program record of 3:38.05, the Bulldogs' group of Itzia Mejia Garcia, Pipion, Janae Heffernan and Jewel Ash turned in the performance they were looking for. Not only did the quartet win the race, they did it by besting the school record by nearly 90 seconds as Ash crossed the line in 3:36:47. It is the sixth-fastest time in Mountain West history, just three seconds back of the time New Mexico's group recorded a week ago.
Earlier in the day, it was Pipion re-breaking her school record in the invitational section of the 400 meters. Running her heat seemingly all alone, the senior clocked a time of 52.29, though she finished second in the overall standings. Pipion bested her previous record of 52.90. Her new record is the third-fastest time ever recorded in the Mountain West.
SEATTLE - Fresno State closed out the Husky Classic on Saturday seeing Chiara Pedol jump into the Top 5 in program history in her second event this year. The freshman claimed the No. 4 spot on the list at 4:55.42.
In the 800 meters, Victoria Nino was just off her season-best pace, finishing with a time of 2:13.54.
Over in the long jump, Matilde Guarino and Ella Spaulding shared second place as both recorded a top mark of 5.69m/18-8.
