BERKELEY, Calif.- Fresno State women's tennis team see's the end of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships in Berkeley at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Sofia Pizzoni endured the longest standing of the tournament with two singles match wins against Oregon and Davis.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sofia Pizzoni and Eliza Dunbar started the weekend off for the Bulldogs with a doubles match in the round of 64. The pair fell to SJSU's Igelsias/Dho after pushing to a tiebreaker set, 7(5)-8(7).
Ranked No. 6 in the qualifying singles draw, Pizzoni found her footing in singles play. Pizzoni pulled through taking down Oregon's Visaya in the first and third set, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Moving on to the round of 32 just a few hours later to take on Galerkin (Davis). Another first and third set win cleared Pizzoni into the main draw round of 64.
Dunbar fell to second seed Symons from Cal in the opening qualifying round, 6-2, 4-6, 5-7.
Eight seeded doubles pair Matilde Magrini and Yinglak Jittakoat fell to Washington State's Abouelsaad/Markov, 8-4. Magrini saw her next opportunity for grab a win in the main draw singles opening round. Grab she did, Magrini defeated Mladentseva in two hard fought sets, 7(7)-6(4), 7-5. Ready for one more, Magrini faced Cal's seeded Mushika but fell in two sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Pizzoni saw her hot streak end in the main draw pool against nine seed Matsuda from Washington, 6-1, 6-0.
