FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State volleyball team defeated the Sacramento State Hornets in four sets on day two of the Central Cal Challenge. The 'Dogs are now 1-1 as the host of the three-day tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State had a slow start, struggling with attack errors and strong play from Sacramento State. They kept the score close with solid contributions from Kasey Purry with two blocks and three kills, and Ella Rud with a block and four kills, but Sacramento State's efficient attacking gave them the edge, winning 25-20.
The Bulldogs rebounded impressively in the second set, displaying strong offensive play with a team attack percentage of .409. Addison Haluska led the team with five kills and a .667 attack percentage while their blocking and defense shut down Sacramento State's offense, outblocking the Hornets five to one. The set ended with a convincing 25-13 final in favor of Fresno State.
Fresno State continued its momentum into the third set, executing well-rounded play led by Rud with five kills and a service ace. Sacramento State struggled to find any rhythm, leading the Bulldogs to a comfortable 25-16 win.
The final set was more competitive, with both teams wielding attack percentages over .350. Fresno State stayed consistent and despite being out-hit 17-14 by the Hornets, the Bulldogs remained in control as they never gave up the lead and closed out the set 25-21 and the match 3-1 overall.
NOTES
Ella Rud led the team with 17 kills in her second-straight double-double, and third double-double of the season, totaling 10 digs.
Sophomore Ella Smith made her home-match debut for the 'Dogs and recorded a block assist.
This is Fresno State's first win on the team's new Taraflex court debuted late last season.
