FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State women's basketball head coach Jaime White is pleased to announce the hiring of Alan Nakamura as the new assistant coach for the 2024-25 season.
"We are thrilled to welcome Coach Alan Nakamura, whose extensive experience and work ethic will be invaluable in elevating our basketball program," said head coach Jaime White. "With a proven track record of success, Alan will bring a wealth of knowledge and a fresh perspective that will help guide the Bulldogs to new heights."
His responsibilities at Fresno State will focus on recruitment in the Southern California area, development of the guards, specifically perimeter players and a Hoop Club representative.
"I am thankful to be a part of Coach White's staff! They are smart, knowledgeable, experienced, and really care about the players," said Nakamura. "The roster is strong: the players are talented, coachable, have a good work ethic, and play like a team. The future is bright and I'm excited to have the opportunity to give all I can to the program."
Nakamura comes to Fresno State with over 20+ years of coaching experience at the collegiate level. He'll join the Bulldogs after nine years as the head coach of the women's basketball program at Biola University, where he held a 132-113 (.539) career record leading the Eagles. Under Nakamura's leadership, Biola qualified for the Pac West Championship every year they've been eligible (since 2017), achieved a twenty-win-season and was named GSAC Coach of the Year in his second year as head coach.
Prior to Biola, Nakamura spent 15 seasons as an assistant coach at Point Loma. While in San Diego he help lead the Sea Lions to a top-three Pac West conference finish and a playoff victory in the NCAA Regional First Round.
"My family and friends have been very supportive through this process - I am deeply thankful for them. Plus I couldn't ask for a more exciting place to land than with Fresno State Women's Basketball," said Nakamura. "I told the staff that I have always wanted to be a part of a program that has strong support and commitment from a community like the San Joaquin Valley!"
On the personal side, he is an avid surfer, a two-time Southern California master's Champion and spent time on the professional surfing circuit. Together, Nakamura and his wife Franci, have three children; Kealoha, Kalani and Selah-Joy.
Nakamura graduated from San Diego State with a B.A. in Psychology and went on to earn a Single Subject credential in Physical Education and Psychology and an M.A. in Education/Physical Education at Azusa Pacific.
