IRVINE, Calif.- Aliz Kalmar made a strong statement to open the first day of the Speedo Grand Challenge winning the 100 breaststroke with a new personal best of 1:08.69 and pulling in the upset over No. 1 seed Isabelle Odgers from USC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The day began with the 100 breaststroke for the Bulldogs with Aliz Kalmar (1:08.76) seeded at No. 2 and Allie Byrne (1:12.57) seeded No. 18. A. Kalmar held onto that No. 2 spot, taking her place for the championship final with a time of 1:09.83. Bryne qualified into the consolation "B" final with a time of 1:13.40. Kalmar pulled the upset victory in the championship final of the 100 breaststroke with a personal best time of 1:08.69, over USC's Isabelle Odger.
Prelims continued with Julia Matney in the 50 freestyle, Matney would take 34th place for a time of 27.76. Laura Kalmar rounded out the preliminary session with the 400 freestyle. Kalmar dropped 28.62 seconds to qualify into the consolation "B" finals with a time of 4:29.54. Another 0.95 second time drop for Kalmar earns her an 18th place finish for a time of 4:28.59.
UP NEXT: Day two prelims of the Speedo Grand Challenge begins at 8:30 a.m. PT. Julia Matney will be the lone 'Dog' for Saturday's events swimming the 100 butterfly.
