'Dogs split doubleheader with Aztecs

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team split the doubleheader with San Diego State to open the series. The Bulldogs (20-9, 2-3 MW) took game one 4-1 before falling to the Aztecs (16-13. 3-2 MW) in 13 innings in the second game 5-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE

Natalie Elias extended her hitting streak to 22 games with a leadoff single. Sophia Medellin brought her home with an RBI-double.

The Bulldogs extended their lead in the next inning. Alyssa Ramirez hit a one-out single and Emma Martinez followed with an RBI-triple to right-center, giving Fresno State a 2-0 lead.

The 'Dogs continued to bring in runs in the third inning, as Elias leadoff with another single, and Keahilele Mattson followed with a bunt single. Elias used her speed to score on a wild pitch and Mattson stole home during the next at-bat. Fresno State held a 4-0 lead after four.

SDSU got on the board in the top of the sixth, plating one run off three hits.

Fresno State continued to stall SDSU's offense in the top of the seventh, taking the first game of the doubleheader, 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO

The Aztecs struck first in the top of the second, plating one run off two hits.

SDSU's pitcher Allie Light had retired 17 straight Fresno State batters, as Ramirez stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs. Ramirez blasted a solo home run to tie the game.

The Bulldogs and the Aztecs battled through five additional innings without a run, before SDSU's offense broke through in the top of the 13th inning plating four runs on three hits.

Fresno State was unable to respond in the bottom of the frame, falling 5-1.

Fresno State and SDSU will play the series finale on Sunday, March 24 at Noon at Margie Wright Diamond.
