'Dogs open West Coast Relays with two wins

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State opened the West Coast Relays on Friday with a pair of event wins at Warmerdam Field. Amelia DiPaola took first in the hammer while Shaylee Grimm won the steeplechase.

The afternoon began with the women's hammer. DiPaola led the Bulldogs to a 1-2-3-4 finish. The senior's top throw came on her final attempt, landing a mark of 58.09m/190-7. Emma Harper took second with a personal best 56.74m/186-2. Jocelynn Budwig was right behind with a mark of 56.55m/185-6. Maria Lawson was fourth, tossing a new PB of 51.07m/167-6.

Running the first race at Warmerdam Field since 2013, Shaylee Grimm won the women's steeplechase with a time of 11:12.16, six seconds off her personal best. Ashley Ochoa placed third at 11:27.71.

The meet will continue tomorrow at Veteran's Memorial Stadium. The Bulldogs' day will start at 11 a.m. PT with the women's long jump.
