FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State baseball team is back at home this week to face Loyola Marymount on Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. PT at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
THROWBACK
Fresno State will be facing LMU for the first time in 14 years, nearly to the day.
The last time the Diamond 'Dogs hosted LMU was in 2010 for a three-game series.
The Lions won the series with back-to-back wins, 4-3 and 5-2.
The Bulldogs won the series finale, 16-10 on March 21, 2010.
NEWT SCOOTIN' BOOGIE
Senior infielder Ben Newton took on a new role for the Diamond 'Dogs this season as the shortstop after spending 2023 at second base.
So far in 2024, Newton has started every game at shortstop and has recorded 22 hits in 65 at-bats to give him a .338 average.
Newton also has seven doubles, a triple and 12 RBIs.
In last week's midweek game and Mountain West series, Newton led the Bulldogs at the plate, going seven for 15, a .467 average.
Newton went five for 11 against reining conference champion San Jose State in the Bulldogs' series victory on the road.
In total, Newton scored three runs, two RBIs, three doubles, and a stolen base this week.
WHAT A RELIEF IT IS
Redshirt sophomore Victor Arreola has become one of the Bulldogs' most reliable relievers this season with 14.1 innings pitched.
Arreola has yet to record an earned run this season and has accumulated a 2-0 record.
In his seven appearances, batters have only totaled seven hits and four walks.
Hitters are held to a .140 average against Arreola.
Arreola has 18 strikeouts on the books this season, averaging over a strikeout per inning.
