COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Fresno State senior Matthew Sutherland was named the Mountain West Golfer of the Week for tournaments played Feb. 29-March 6, announced by the conference on Thursday afternoon.
Sutherland led the No. 42 Bulldogs to a second-place finish at the Lamkin Invitational held at the par 72/7,033-yard San Diego Country Club. The 16-team field featured eight teams ranked within the top 50 of the latest NCAA computer rankings. Fresno State finished ahead of No. 4 Washington, No. 13 Georgia Tech, No. 19 New Mexico, No. 29 LSU, No. 41 LMU, No. 31 San Diego State and No. 43 Brigham Young.
The Sacramento, Calif. native finished tied for third with a score of 8-under 208 in the field of 95, recording his second consecutive top-10 finish. He posted a 4-under 68 in the opening round, a 3-under 69 in the second round and finished the event with a 1-under 71.
The senior has had four top-five finishes this season. This is the second MW weekly award of Sutherland's career.
Fresno State is back in action March 18-19 at the Pauma Valley Invitational hosted by LMU at the Pauma Valley Country Club.
