SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Fresno State Baseball team fell to the Sacramento State Hornets, 8-6, on Wednesday evening at John Smith Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Leadoff hitter Eddie Saldivar cracked a stand-up double on the third pitch of the game and was brought home by an RBI from Murf Gray.
The Hornets earned their first runs in the bottom of the third inning after a leadoff triple and a single in the inning scored two.
Tommy Hopfe knotted the game back at two in the fourth with a solo shot to start the inning. Bryce Armstrong took the mound for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the inning and closed it out, three-up, three-down.
Grady Morgan hit a double into right field in the sixth inning to give the Bulldogs an additional pair of runs, scoring Saldivar and Hopfe. The Hornets responded with three consecutive home runs in the bottom of the frame and an RBI single to make it a 6-4 game. Sacramento State added two more runs in the next inning with their fourth home run of the game, scoring two runs.
Fresno State attempted to rally in the eighth inning with three singles from Saldivar, Hopfe and Rocco Peppi, scoring two runs before heading to the ninth. The Hornets were able to hold the Bulldogs scoreless to close the game with a final score of 8-6.
NOTES
Tommy Hopfe hit his first home run of the season after leading the Bulldogs in the stat category in 2023 with 13.
Eddie Saldivar went 3-5, scoring 50% of Fresno State's runs in the game.
Carson Revay made his debut on the mound and recorded his first strikeout of his career.
