'Dogs wrap up 2023 against No.1 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. – The Fresno State volleyball team concluded its season in the first round of the NCAA DI Women's Volleyball Championship tournament with a defeat to No. 1 Stanford in straight sets at Maples Pavilion.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Fresno State kept a solid hold on the Cardinal throughout the first set as they remained within a point of Stanford through most of the match. Fresno State hit .241 with 10 kills and a solo block from Kasey Purry. Stanford's biggest lead was three points, excluding the final point as the Cardinal won the set 25-21.

No. 1 seed Stanford turned up the heat in the second set, as they had an attack percentage of .448 compared to Fresno State's .031. The Cardinal totaled 14 kills on the set with eight block assists while Fresno State had nine kills and two block assists. Stanford won the second set 25-12.

The third set played out in a similar fashion with no tie scores or lead changes after Stanford scored three straight to open. Stanford kept a comfortable distance ahead of the 'Dogs, taking as much as an 11-point lead over Fresno State in the heart of the set. Fresno State went up for eight kills before being defeated by Stanford 25-15 in the third set and 3-0 overall.

NOTES:

With 14 digs in total tonight, Dionii Fraga left it all on the court as she extended rallies with several impressive defensive plays.

Ella Rud and Addison Haluska ran the Bulldog offense for the evening with seven kills apiece.

Stanford was one of four No. 1 seeds in the tournament and was given the No. 2 seed overall.

The Red Wave made a statement in the Maples Pavilion tonight to support the Bulldogs in their first NCAA tournament appearance in 21 years. Thank you, fans, for your unmatched support in 2023!
