COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the second week in a row, Fresno State has had a player earn Mountain West player of the week honors. Junior running back Malik Sherrod was announced as Special Teams Player of the Week by the conference office on Monday.
Sherrod had Fresno State's first kickoff return for a touchdown since 2008, returning a Boise State kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to end the first half in Fresno State's 37-30 home win against the Broncos to take back the Milk Can trophy for the first time since 2017.
Sherrod's kickoff return touchdown was the 11th in program history. The 95 yards on the return were the most since a 98-yard KO return touchdown by A.J. Jefferson on Nov. 10, 2007.
Around the Mountain West, Sherrod is the only player to record a kickoff return for a touchdown in a conference game this season. He is one of two from the league to take one back to the house in any game in 2023.
With an additional 132 yards of total offense last Saturday against Boise State, Sherrod totaled 255 all-purpose yards on the night, the 10th most in a game in Bulldog football history.
Sherrod is the first Bulldog since 2018 to earn the special teams weekly honor by the conference, and just the seventh Bulldog since joining the MW in 2012.
This season, Fresno State has had five different players earn MW weekly honors in 2023 in Sherrod, Dean Clark (Defensive), Levelle Bailey (Defensive), Carlton Johnson (Defensive) and Mikey Keene (Offensive). So far, it is the most Bulldogs to earn the weekly honors in a single season since 2021.
Sherrod and the Bulldogs are back on the road for the first time since Oct. 13 this weekend, traveling north to San Jose State to go head-to-head for the Valley Trophy. Kickoff from San Jose is set for 7:30 p.m. PT with a broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
