FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State volleyball team ended its five game winning streak with a 3-2 loss to San Jose State on Thursday night in the Save Mart Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first two sets played out in a very similar fashion, with the Spartans pulling ahead late in the match as they won set one 25-22 and set two 25-21.
Set three nearly followed the same pattern, but the Bulldogs went on a 5-1 run to snag a lead that they held on to for the rest of the set. Fresno State outkilled San Jose State 15-5 and won the third set 25-16.
The Bulldogs weren't ready to back down in the fourth set, as they pulled ahead at the halfway point after staying within a point through the 11-11 tie. Fresno State pulled ahead by as much as six points in the set and with five kills from Ella Rud, the Bulldogs took set four, 25-20, forcing a fifth set.
Fresno State had a strong start to the deciding set as they won the first three points. The Bulldogs took a 7-4 lead, causing San Jose State to exhaust a time out. The Spartans bounced back after the break and took a one-point lead over the 'Dogs. Fresno State stayed resilient as the team added three more kills to the board in the set. The Bulldogs were in the match until the final point but fell 15-13 to the Spartans in the final set and 3-2 overall.
NOTES
Fresno State now holds a 13-10 (7-5 MW) record in 2023. On this day in 2022, the Bulldogs had yet to win a conference match.
Jenna Legault topped her career-high kills with 18 on the night. Her previous career high was 16 against Colorado State in the Bulldogs' first road win in Fort Collins since 1996 on October 19.
Brooke Cowie and Ella Rud both earned double-doubles tonight with Cowie claiming 42 assists and 13 digs and Rud collecting 15 kills and 13 digs.
