FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State volleyball team defeated the Aztecs of San Diego State in five sets in the Bulldogs' first home match in the last two weeks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs and Aztecs played an evenly matched first set and stayed within two points of each other before SDSU took a 21-18 lead. Fresno State fired back and with a kill from Jenna Legault reversed the lead to 23-21 in favor of the Bulldogs. San Diego State tallied two more kills and defeated the Bulldogs 25-23 in the match opener.
Fresno State took set two and ran with it, earning themselves a 15-9 lead at the media break. Fresno State put SDSU in a 13-point deficit to conclude the set at 25 to 12.
Fresno State started set three ahead, but with an Aztec kill, SDSU tied the set at nine. The Aztecs did not relinquish the lead and defeated the Bulldogs 25 to 19.
Set four had the Red Wave on the edge of their seats as the Bulldogs carried a six-point lead triggering an SDSU timeout. After the timeout, the Aztecs went on a ten to three run to tie the set at 23. Fresno State delivered three kills to secure a 28 to 26 set.
Fresno State had a slow start in the deciding set, losing the first three points but slowly chipped away at the Aztec lead. A kill from Junior Ella Rud put the 'Dogs on top. Fresno State eventually defeated the Aztecs 15 to 9 in the deciding set with a 3-2 overall victory.
NOTES
Ella Rud led the Bulldogs in kills for the fifth time this season, earning 15 tonight.
Head Coach Leisa Rosen's first recruit, Mya Sellers owned the block category in her second career start with four solos and an assist.
Fresno State is now 5-1 in matches that play out to five sets.
