'Dogs best Wolf Pack in five sets

RENO, Nev. – The Fresno State volleyball team snagged its second conference win of the year by defeating the Nevada Wolf Pack 3-2 on Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs now sit at 8-6 overall (2-1 MW) and have already surpassed the number of overall wins and conference wins the team had in 2022 (7-23, 1-17 MW).

HOW IT HAPPENED

In the opening set of the match, the Bulldogs had nine kills on the board and closely trailed behind the Wolf Pack at the media time-out, 15-12. Fresno State added four more kills but dropped the opener 25-21.

Fresno State started the second set in a deficit, but slowly climbed back to the top, leading 15-14 at the first break. The Bulldogs kept the lead for the remainder of the set, and with a season-high four kills from Maja Malczewska, won the second set 25-22.

The Bulldogs took charge in the back half of the third set after finding themselves down 15-12, Fresno State went on a 10-2 run to give them the lead. Just three points away from finishing the set, the Bulldogs came out on top after a kill courtesy of Olivia Keller and Wolf Pack Attack errors.

The Wolf Pack kept a tight grip on the lead in the fourth set, only allowing three lead changes and for the Bulldogs to carry a charge for three scores. After taking a 7-6 lead, the Bulldogs couldn't best the Wolf Pack for the remainder of the set, despite nine kills and 13 blocks in the fourth, and fell 25-20, forcing a fifth set.

Nevada won the opening point in the first set with a service ace to give them their only lead in the deciding set. Jenna Legault stepped up to the plate in the last half of the final set with two kills that helped push the Bulldogs over the edge with a 15-10 set win and a 3-2 match victory.

NOTES

Olivia Keller earned a season-high four kills over the Wolf Pack.

Brooke Cowie added another double-double to her season total of 10 with 41 assists and 14 digs on the night.

Addison Haluska led in kills with 16, closely followed by redshirt freshman Jenna Legault with a career-high 15 kills and 16.5 points scored.
