Fresno State sits in fifth after day one

FRESNO, Calif. — The Fresno State men's golf team wrapped up the first day of the Nick Watney Invitational, carding a score of 12-under 556. The Bulldogs sit in fifth place through 36 holes at Fort Washington Golf and Country Club.

Fresno State found its rhythm in the second round. After finishing the first round in eighth place, the 'Dogs scored a 12-under 272 to move up three spots on the leaderboard.

Matthew Sutherland and Andrew Lee led the team, both posting a 3-under 139. Lee tied his season-low round with a 68 in Round 2.

Freshman Ryan Firpo made his debut in the Bulldogs' lineup, finishing the day with a 2-under 140.

Playing as individuals, Jaden Hunter and Mason Benbrook had successful outings. Hunter ended the day tied at 20th with his fellow Bulldogs after recording a 3-under 139. Hunter carded a career-low round of 68 through his first 18 holes. Benbrook chalked a 1-under 141.

The Bulldogs will tee off tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. PT with a shotgun start. Fresno State is paired with Cal Baptist, Gonzaga and UC Irvine.
