Fresno State falters to Falcons

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State volleyball team dropped the Mountain West opener to Air Force on Thursday night in the Save Mart Center, 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bulldogs had a dominant start in the opening set as they led by as much as 12 before winning the set 25-14. The Falcons took the loss as a wake-up call and kept a strong grasp on the lead for most of the second set. Fresno State tied it up at 25-25 to keep things interesting but back-and-forth kills were broken up by a Bulldog attack error and the Falcons won the set 29-27. Air Force opened the third set with a 5-0 run, followed quickly by a 5-1 run from Fresno State. The competition stayed within two before the Falcons hit a late surge to send them over the edge, 25-20. The fourth set was a brawl with both teams staying within three points throughout with 29 kills exchanged, but the Bulldogs were unable to close out the set, falling 25-22 in the set and 3-1 overall.

NOTES

Fresno State led by 12 points in the first set, its highest lead of the season so far.

Brooke Cowie delivered four service aces for the second time in her career.

Jenna Legault clocked in a new career-high .409 hitting percentage and 13 kills.

Kasey Purry surpassed the 200-career kill milestone with seven on the books against Air Force.
