SAN FRANCISCO - Fresno State's Mariya Vyshkina and Misaki Kobayashi will open the Bulldogs' 2023 fall women's tennis season on Thursday in the Battle in the Bay tournament at The California Tennis Club.
The four-day tournament features women's singles and doubles players from these elite programs: Fresno State, Pepperdine, Georgia, Stanford, Oklahoma State, TCU, VCU, UCSB, Colorado, Arizona, Pacific, and USF.
Kobayashi and Vyshkina will start play in the women's open doubles draw against Pacific's Tomi Main and Klara Kosen in the Round of 16 on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. PT, and then also compete in singles on Thursday afternoon.
Kobayashi (Yokohama, Japan) is a graduate transfer from Oregon, who also played two seasons primarily for Cal State Fullerton, and is suiting up for the first time as a Bulldog this week. Kobayashi played in 20 singles matches and 18 doubles contests over two spring seasons at Oregon, who was consistently nationally ranked in the ITA rankings. Before her time in Eugene, Kobayashi starred at Cal State Fullerton, where she collected All-Big West honors in 2021, and has multiple ITA Scholar Athlete accolades in her career.
Vyshkina, a true sophomore in 2023, was a three-time Mountain West Freshman of the Week a season ago. She finished her freshman campaign with six singles wins and six doubles victories.
