Three interceptions earn Johnson MW Player of the Week honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Fresno State senior cornerback Carlton Johnson has been named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday morning. Johnson helped lead Fresno State's defense to a 29-0 shutout victory on the road at Arizona State last Saturday.

Johnson earned the honor for the first time in his career. He is the first Bulldog cornerback to be selected as MW defensive player of the week since the school joined the league.

Johnson had the performance of his career against the Sun Devils, grabbing a career-high three interceptions in the win. All three of his interceptions were off of different Arizona State quarterbacks.

The three interceptions by Johnson ties the single-game program record and the Mountain West record. The last Bulldog to record three interceptions in a game was Phillip Thomas against Colorado in 2012. Johnson is the sixth Bulldog in program history to record a three interception game.

Johnson now ties for the FBS lead as one of two players to have three interceptions in a game this season.

The efforts strung together by Johnson and the Bulldog defense kept Fresno State's active winning streak alive and extended to 12-straight games. Fresno State recorded a shutout over a Power 5 opponent for the first time since 1986.
