'Dogs finish second at Maui Jim Invitational

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Fresno State men's golf team finished second in the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, scoring 45-under par on the weekend to set a new program low, breaking a record that had stood since 2005. Earning the best finish of his career, tying for second, Joseph Lloyd carded a 17-under par, tying Nick Watney for the Fresno State 54-hole record versus par.

No. 6 Auburn took home the trophy after chalking a 56-under. The Bulldogs defeated San Diego State, Ohio State, SMU, New Mexico, Oregon, UNLV, Arkansas - Little Rock, Missouri, Texas State, Colorado, Georgia State, Santa Clara and Mercer. The second-place finish was the Bulldogs' best in a season-opening tournament since Sept. 27, 2011 when they tied for second at the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational.

"We had a great weekend out here," said head coach Chad Spencer. "Joseph Lloyd had a great tournament. Mathew Sutherland is on a serious hot streak over the past four weeks. Matthew Manganello is a veteran for us and had solid play over the weekend. It was a great start to the season."

Lloyd, a Scottsdale native led the Bulldogs for the third straight round, carding his second 66. Lloyd's 17-under par for the tournament tied for the program's 54-hole record vs. par.

Shooting his second 67 of the weekend, Matthew Sutherland finished fifth overall with a 15-under.

NOTES

The 45-under par is a new program low, one shot better than the previous low which has stood since the April 23, 2005 at the PING BYU Cougar Classic.

The Bulldogs' score of 807 smashed the program's 54-hole record of 820 which came from that same tournament.

It is just the second time in Fresno State's history that the team has been more than 25 strokes under par.

Joseph Lloyd's 196 set the program 54-hole score, breaking Nick Watney's 199 which was set at the Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on April 1, 2003.

Lloyd's 17-under tied Nick Watney (2003) for the lowest 54-hole tournament vs. par in program history.

Posting a 198, Matthew Sutherland also passed Watney's 54-hole total.

Sutherland's 15-under is the fourth-best score versus par in program history.
