FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State Volleyball team is headed east to face Utah Tech and Southern Utah over the weekend.
The Bulldogs will open the weekend on Friday in St. George, Utah to compete against Utah Tech at 10 a.m. PT before heading to Cedar City for an afternoon matchup with Southern Utah at 5:30 p.m. PT.
Fresno State will return to the court on Saturday morning for a rematch against the Trailblazers at 11 a.m. PT. to close out the weekend.
HOME SWEET HOME
The Bulldogs claimed their first win at the Save Mart Center in Fresno State's home opener on Friday in a rematch against CSUN.
Fresno State won in five sets after being swept by the Matadors earlier in the week in Northridge.
This was head coach Leisa Rosen's first win in from of the Red Wave and the first Bulldog win at home since Nov. 5. 2022 when Fresno State defeated Boise State.
(GRAD) SCHOOL'S IN SESSION
Grad student Grace Doyle came in clutch for the Bulldogs in Friday's rematch against CSUN with a team-leading and career-high 23 kills and a .543 attack percentage.
Doyle accounted for nearly 40% of the team's kills and 33% of the Bulldog's points scored with 27.5 in the five-set win to claim redemption over CSUN.
Doyle earned the most kills in 5 sets in the conference last week with 23 and the most points in five sets with 27.5. She also earned the second most points total in the conference last week.
In addition, Doyle tallied 31 kills on the week against CSUN in two matches, leading the Bulldogs with a .444 attack percentage and leading the conference with her career-high 23 kills last week.
DIGGIN' IT
Dionii Fraga stepped up to the plate for the Bulldogs this week, starting all 8 sets for the Bulldogs at Libero.
Fraga tallied 36 digs, 4.50 digs per set this week.
In Friday's match against the Matadors, Dionii added 26 digs, nearly 36% of digs for the Bulldogs. She also accumulated 14 receptions for a 1.000 reception percentage.
In comparison to the rest of the conference, Fraga tied for second in the conference with 4.50 digs/set, and the third most digs in 5 sets as a freshman this week.
She currently sits at third in the conference with 4.55 digs per set this season.
NEWCOMERS
The Bulldogs have grown by four in 2023 with the addition of freshmen Mya Sellers, Dionii Fraga, Ella Smith and Jayden Xiong.
Sellers, a middle blocker out of Charlotte, N.C., is Rosen's first signee as a head coach.
Smith also serves as a middle blocker while Fraga and Xiong add to the libero lineup.
BACK AND BETTER
The Bulldogs return six starters from the 2022 season in Hannah Waters, Ella Rud, Grace Doyle, Kasey Purry, Addison Haluska and Sydney Gazzaniga.
Doyle wrapped up the 2022 season as an All-Mountain West Selection with Rud earning an honorable mention nod. The pair led the 'Dogs in kills with 393 for Rud and 301 for Doyle.
Fresno State returns 92% of its kills, 98.7% of its assists, 88.9% of its digs, 93.3% of its blocks and 82.6% of its service aces from the 2022 season.
GOING GLOBAL
Ella Rud and Grace Doyle were selected to participate in the Mountain West Global Challenge with 10 other student-athletes from around the conference.
The team traveled to Croatia to gain international playing experience and exposure.
