FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State baseball's Murf Gray has been named the 2023 Mountain West Freshman of the Year, the conference announced before the 2023 MW Championship on Thursday morning.
Tommy Hopfe and Ixan Henderson were also named All-Mountain West First Team while Roman Angelo and Bobby Blandford earned All-Mountain Second Team honors.
Gray, the Madera, Calif. native is only the third Bulldog to win the Freshman of the Year award since Fresno State joined the Mountain West in 2013, following in the footsteps of Blake Quinn in 2013 and Carter Bins in 2017.
Gray earned MW Freshman of the Week a whopping seven times this season, five of which were in consecutive weeks. He is one of two people to win a MW weekly baseball honor for five weeks in a row, tied with Stephen Strasburg in 2008.
In his freshman season, Gray led the Bulldogs in batting average for multiple weeks this year. He has crushed eight home runs this season and has the second-best average on the team at .306.
Gray has started in 39 games at third base and owns a .901 fielding percentage in the hot corner.
