TUCSON, ARIZ. – Sinking eight birdies on Day 1 of the Mountain West Championships, Fresno State's Matthew Manganello is tied for the lead at 6-under par through 18 holes at the OMNI Tucson National. The junior's 66 tied Trevor Clayton (2016) for the lowest round by a Bulldog at a Mountain West tournament.
With four 'Dogs under par in Friday's first round, Fresno State is tied for third with New Mexico at 10-under par (278). San Diego State leads at 16 under.
Manganello looked to be in contention early on, firing birdies on his first two holes and sitting at 2 under through eight holes. A double bogey at No. 9 dropped him back though. He responded with a birdie on 10 and shot 4-under on the back nine. His eight birdies is tied for the tournament lead.
Joseph Lloyd is tied for the 18th at 2-under par. The sophomore sank four birdies during the middle of his round in a stretch of five holes. His lone blemish of the day came at No. 18 with a double bogey.
Like Lloyd, Jaden Hunter also had 13 pars during his round, the second most of anyone in the field. The freshman shot 1 under and is tied for 23rd. Also carding a 71 was junior teammate Matthew Sutherland.
Fresno State will begin teeing off its second round tomorrow at 9 a.m. PT.
