'Dogs fall in pitchers' duel against Spartans

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State baseball team stumbled 2-1 against Mountain West leader San Jose State Friday night at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.

With the loss, Fresno State now sits at 18-18 on the season (9-9 Mountain West) while the Spartans advanced to 19-15 (12-4 MW).

NOTES:

Tommy Hopfe hit his sixth home run of the season, making him the Bulldogs' home run leader.

Ixan Henderson tossed a total of eight strikeouts while only allowing one walk and one run.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Tommy Hopfe was the first to reach home after he launched his sixth home run of the season over the right field wall in the top of the fourth.

The Spartans responded with a nearly identical solo shot to tie it in the bottom of the inning.

The pitchers' duel continued as both teams remained scoreless through the ninth inning, but an RBI double in the bottom of the 10th pushed the Spartans to a 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs.

UP NEXT: Fresno State will return as the home team tomorrow at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. PT.
