'Dogs return for more conference play against Aztecs

FRESNO, Calif. – Mountain West baseball is returning to Fresno as the 'Dogs are set to face conference leader San Diego State this weekend at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.

The 'Dogs are looking to snap a six-game skid with a victory over SDSU after coming off a mid-week 10-7 loss against the Long Beach State Dirtbags on Tuesday.

Fresno State currently sits at 15-16 on the season (7-7 MW), while SDSU owns a 12-17 season record (7-3 MW). The 'Dogs are only two games behind the Aztecs in the MW standings.

Bulldog Block Party

Now in its second year, the Bulldog Block Party has returned as an all-day athletics celebration event on Saturday. Bulldog fans are encouraged to come spend the day with Fresno State Athletics, enjoying the best tailgating in the Mountain West, live Bulldog football action, a block party on Bulldog BLVD, Bulldog baseball taking on a rival and Fresno State Vintage Days.

For only $20, fans can purchase an all-day tailgating pass that will be good for a tailgate spot in the red or white lot, on the east and west sides of Valley Children's Stadium. The $20 tailgate pass can be purchased here and also includes two tickets to the Fresno State baseball game against San Diego State that afternoon.

Strikeout King, Ixan Henderson:

Junior pitcher Ixan Henderson has led the Mountain West in strikeouts all season long, currently with 53 over 46.2 innings pitched.

Henderson leads the 'Dogs with a 3.47 ERA with only 20 runs scored against him while only allowing 15 walks in eight starts.

Three-peat Freshman of the Week, Murf Gray:

Three-time Freshman of the Week Murf Gray leads the 'Dogs at the plate with a .313 average on the season and a .450 slugging percentage.

Gray started every game for the Bulldogs in last week's road series against Air Force, and the mid-week matchup against UC Irvine, at third base and currently leads the Bulldogs at the plate with a .307 average.

He owned a .375 average last week with his first career triple and second career double, and two RBIs.

Defensively, Gray held a perfect fielding percentage last week with four putouts and four assists as the third baseman.

Tough Guy Travis:

Senior Travis Welker is one of two Diamond 'Dogs to be in the starting lineup for all 31 games so far in 2023.

He currently owns a .281 average and sits at 9th toughest to strikeout in the nation with only six strikeouts over 96 at-bats.

He is also sixth in the nation in sacrifice bunts with eight on the season.

Defensively, Welker owns a .978 fielding percentage and is responsible for 50 putouts and 82 assists this season with only three errors.

A look at the Aztecs:

San Diego State has a 12-17 overall record and has lost four of their last five games.

The Aztecs are led at the plate by Cole Carrigg with a .329 batting average, .534 slugging percentage and .354 on-base percentage.

Projected Friday starter and leading Aztec pitcher TJ Fondtain has a 3.40 season ERA over 45 innings pitched and holds a 3-2 record. He has thrown a total 49 strikeouts this season and given up 40 hits and 17 earned runs.
