Notes
Fresno State returns to the El Macero Classic this weekend looking to defend its title from 2022.
Sitting 10th though Round 1, the Bulldogs rallied to win the 54-hole event at 7-under par, one shot ahead of Long Beach State. It was the program's first team win since 2012.
Matthew Sutherland earned his first career collegiate title at the El Macero Classic in 2021.
Fourteen teams in the event rank inside Golfstat's Top 125. The 'Dogs are the sixth-highest at No. 80.
The Bulldogs' top performance of the year came at the Nick Watney Invitational, shooting 22-under par (277-279-274—830) during the two-day event.
Matthew Manganello has won two tournaments this year, with his last coming at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. He is the first Bulldog to earn multiple individual medalist honors in the same season since Nick Watney in 2002.
Closing out the fall, Manganello earned the program's 31st individual tournament win for the program during the last 25 years, shooting a 7-under 206 at the Saint Mary's Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Club.
Manganello has claimed Mountain West Golfer of the Week or Golfer of the Month three times this season. The junior has been under par in 17 of the 23 rounds he has played this year.
Matthew Sutherland has earned Top 10 finishes in four tournaments this season following a ninth-place finish at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. His first three came during the fall, finishing with an 11-under par at the Nick Watney Invitational (4th) a 9-under par at the Wolf Pack Classic (4th) and then a 8-under par at the Stockton Invitational (5th).
Manganello is ranked No. 89 in the nation according to GolfStat while Sutherland is No. 103.
In his first tournament as a Bulldog, Utah transfer Joseph Lloyd finished two spots back of Sutherland. The sophomore was consistent, shooting in the 60s each round while posting an 8-under par 205 (69-68-68). Lloyd earned his second Top 15 finish in Palm Desert, Calif.
Lloyd added a third at Bandon Dunes, finishing tied for fifth at even-par. Later in the week he earned MW Golfer of the Week honors.
The year's roster is a mix of four returners (Jake Bettencourt, Andrew Lee, Matthew Manganello, Matthew Sutherland), two transfers (Joseph Lloyd, Ryan Mendez) and two true freshmen (Jake Aberle, Jaden Hunter).
Youth is something the Bulldogs have plenty of with no seniors on the roster. Lee, Manganello and Sutherland are the oldest 'Dogs but still have two seasons to play.
Bettencourt and Sutherland entered the year having competed in this past summer's U.S. Amateur
