Bulldogs sting Hornets, 8-2

SACRAMENTO – The Fresno State softball team soundly defeated the Sacramento State Hornets 8-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

The Bulldogs' offense put the pressure on the Hornets early and often, which eventually led to the long ball proving to be the difference.

Keahilele Mattson and Juliana Wilson each homered for Fresno State (10-16), who improved to 41-12 all-time against Sacramento State (14-10).

HOW IT HAPPENED

Fresno State 8, Sacramento State 2

Fresno State scored first in the third inning and then led 5-1 after Mattson's three-run homer in the sixth.

After the Hornets got a run in the bottom of the seventh, Wilson launched a solo home run and Kennedy Bunker hustled for a two-RBI infield single in the seventh for an 8-2 lead.

Abby Doughty delivered three of Fresno State's 13 hits in the road win.

In the circle, Taylor Gilmore, who pitched the final 4.1 innings of the game for the Bulldogs, did not allow an earned run and secured her fourth victory of the season.

NOTES

This was Juliana Wilson's second straight game with a solo home run in the seventh inning.

Four Bulldogs recorded multi-hit games (Mattson, Wilson, Doughty and Bunker), which was highlighted by Abby Doughty's three-hit afternoon,.

In Fresno State's last five games played against Sacramento State, the Bulldogs have outscored the Hornets 32-2.

Fresno State improved to 41-12 all-time against Sacramento State.

Wednesday's game was potentially going to be a doubleheader, but the second game was called as the first game started an hour late due to inclement weather and Shea Stadium does not have lights so it was determined it was unlikely a second game could be completed in time.
