Diamond 'Dogs split doubleheader with Wolf Pack

FRESNO, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against Nevada winning game one, 6-3 before dropping game two, 5-2 at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.

Fresno State (7-6, 1-3 MW) won its Mountain West home opener in game one jumping out to a 5-0 lead before hanging on for the three-run win.

Nevada (8-6, 1-1 MW) bounced back in game two to go out to a 5-0 lead of their own as the 'Dogs attempted to rally back with a pair of runs in the eighth inning and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Tommy Hopfe went down on strikes to end the contest.

The 'Dogs totaled 12 hits in the opener smacking six extra-base hits with Sammy Augustine leading the charge with three hits and scored a pair of runs.

Payton Allen and Bobby Blandford added two hits apiece while Nikoh Mitchell drilled his first triple of the season.

The Bulldogs tallied six hits in the second game with two hits from Ben Newton and doubles from Grady Morgan and Tyler Davis.

On the mound, Ixan Henderson earned his second win of 2023 in game one tossing 5.2 innings striking out six while allowing three hits and three runs. Zach Statzer and Jack Anker combined for the final 3.1 innings with Anker notching his first career save.

The nightcap saw four hurlers in action with Jake Dixon getting the starting nod followed by Victor Arreola, Jaykob Acosta and Robbie Peters.

How It Happened in Game One

A two-run RBI single by Allen in the second inning gave the 'Dogs an early 2-0 lead and three more runs in the fourth gave Fresno State a 5-0 advantage.

An RBI double down the left field line by Allen brought in Augustine and a two-run RBI triple ripped down the right field line by Mitchell ignited the 'Dogs offense.

The Wolf Pack answered back with a three-run sixth inning to cut the 'Dogs lead to 5-3 with Morgan rounding out the scoring for the 'Dogs in the seventh with an RBI double to right field.

How It Happened in Game Two

After a 34-minute lighting delay following the bottom of the fourth inning, the teams traded a scoreless fifth before the Wolf Pack plated four in the sixth and added one more in the eighth for a 5-0 lead.

The 'Dogs broke up Nevada's shutout bid in the bottom of the frame with a two-run RBI double down the left field line by Davis.

A walk by Travis Welker and a single by Newton in the ninth put a pair on base for Hopfe, but the Bakersfield native went down on strikes.
