TURLOCK, Calif. – Coming off a Mountain West title in the javelin last May, but not earning a spot on Fresno State's all-time Top 10, Rhiannon Genilla wasted no time this season. In her first appearance of the season, the senior moved up to sixth on the list, winning the event at the Kim Duyst Invitational with a mark of 50.47m/165-7.
Genilla became just the second Bulldog woman in the last 15 years to surpass the 50-meter mark. The throw came on her first attempt.
Led by Genilla, Fresno State's javelin crew looked dominant with all four throwers clearing 45 meters. Freshman Harriette Mortlock just missed the 50-meter mark as her best throw of the day registered 49.99m//164-0. It was her third attempt over 49 meters in the competition. Transfer Cerah Moren finished with a mark of 46.89m/153-10. Rounding out the Top 4 in the event was Chloe Wood with a throw of 45.18m/148-2.
While the Bulldogs were the class of the women's javelin, four other 'Dogs picked up wins during the meet. Morgan Johnson added another win in the throws as the senior took first in the discus with a toss of 41.65m/136-7.
Ximena Ramos grabbed the lone win on the track for Fresno State, clocking a time of 2:23.52 in the 800 meters.
Two wins came in the jump pits as a pair of Bulldog freshmen swept the long jump. Janae Heffernan earned it on the women's side with a mark of 5.15m/16-10.75 while Bronson Ortlieb won it on the men's side with a jump of 6.92m/22-8.5 on his opening attempt.
