'Dogs stumble in game two in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs left 12 runners on base on Saturday afternoon and fell to San Jose State, 6-2 in game two of its three-game series at Excite Ballpark.

Fresno State (5-5, 0-2 MW) was held to eight hits, getting a single and a home run from Tyler Davis in addition to seven other base knocks, including a pair from Jaden Sheppard.

Tommy Hopfe added a hit, run scored and drew a walk while Ben Newton, Travis Welker and Murf Gray added singles.

On the mound, four Bulldogs saw action with Jake Dixon suffering his first loss of 2023 despite striking out seven Spartans.

Zach Statzer, Jaykob Acosta and Robbie Peters worked 3.1 innings out of the bullpen combining for three strikeouts and allowed a pair of runs.

How It Happened

The 'Dogs wasted little time getting their offense going on Saturday scoring a run in the top of the first taking advantage of a Spartan fielding error that allowed Hopfe to score from second.

The Spartans responded with a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single and increased their lead to 3-1 in the third on a two-run RBI single by James McAdoo.

A two-out RBI single by McAdoo in the fifth increased SJSU's lead to 4-1.

The 'Dogs threatened to cut into the Spartans' lead in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs after a single by Newton, but Nikoh Mitchell hit a sharp ground ball to McAdoo at second base, who turned a solid defensive play to keep the 'Dogs off the board.

The Spartans tacked on two more runs in the seventh for a 6-1 lead as a two-out solo home run by Davis in the ninth got the 'Dogs within four. A flyout to center from Grady Morgan closed out the game.

The Bulldogs and Spartans wrap up the series on Sunday at 12:05 p.m. on the Mountain West Network and the Bulldog Sports Network.
