The Diamond 'Dogs opened the 2023 season last weekend at the MLB Desert Invitational defeating Arizona, 5-0 and fell to Michigan, 6-2 and Michigan State, 7-4.

The 'Dogs opened the season away from Fresno for the first time since 2014.

Fresno State has won 14 straight home openers dating back to 2009 as the 'Dogs saw their 14-game winning streak in season openers come to an end against Michigan.

This will be the 'Dogs first series against Nebraska Omaha.

Fresno State is 2-0 all-time against opponents from the Summit League with wins over Oral Roberts in 2001 and 2002.

The 'Dogs rank second in the MW and 83rd nationally in strikeouts per nine innings (10.3).

The Bulldogs were picked to finish fourth in the Mountain West preseason poll and left-handed pitcher Ixan Henderson was tabbed preseason All-MW.

Henderson leads the MW with eight strikeouts while Jake Dixon and Trevor Garcia hold the conference lead in ERA (0.00).

A look at the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks

Nebraska Omaha is off to an 0-3 start to the season after dropping all three games at UCLA last weekend. Outscored 47-2, the Mavericks dropped games 16-0, 23-1 and 8-1 in those contests.

The Mavericks are coming off a 26-31 overall record last season and a 12-12 mark in the Summit League for a fourth-place finish in the conference.

Omaha was held to a .200 average from the plate against the Bruins with Mike Boeve hitting .333 with four hits in 12 at-bats leading the team with two doubles and a stolen base.

On the pitching side, left-hander Caleb Riedel, a preseason All-American selection, and right-handers Alex Potter and Preston Tenney will get the starts for the Mavs.

Riedel leads the Mavs with six strikeouts while Tenney tossed a team-leading four innings.

New 'Dogs in action

The Bulldogs welcome 18 newcomers to the team this season with seven transfers and 11 freshmen set to make their debuts at Fresno State.

Making their Bulldog debuts last weekend were pitchers Jack Anker (Tulare Western), Jaykob Acosta (CSU Bakersfield), Bryce Armstrong (Washington), outfielders Michael McKernan (College of the Sequoias), Grady Morgan (Butte JC) and infielder Murf Gray.

Other newcomers are infielder Jaden Sheppard (Ohlone College), outfielder Sammy Augustine (Modesto JC) and catcher Thomas Takayoshi (Pierce College).

Nearby high school talent joins the 'Dogs in infielder Jett Ruby (Buchanan), pitcher Nathan Baeza (Clovis West) along with infielders Nick Miller (Ventura) & Aidan Cremarosa (Burbank), catcher Matt Gonsalves (San Ramon), outfielders Wyatt Davis (Petaluma) & Derek Bartram (Novato) and pitchers Carson Revay (Stockton) & Noah Zirkle (Oakland).

Bulldogs Selected Fourth in Mountain West Preseason Coaches Poll

The Diamond 'Dogs were selected fourth in the Mountain West preseason poll tallying 24 points and one first-place vote in the MW preseason poll released on Feb. 9.

UNLV, who won the MW regular season title last season, was selected to win the conference garnering four first-place votes and 33 points while San Jose State and San Diego State were picked second and third, respectively.

Air Force, Nevada and New Mexico rounded out the poll.

Henderson selected to Mountain West Preseason All-Conference Team

A first-team All-Mountain West selection last spring, Henderson made 14 starts on the season leading the Mountain West with 98 strikeouts. The Clovis West graduate led the team and ranked fourth in the MW with seven wins while his 78.2 innings pitched ranked third in the conference.

Henderson earned three Mountain West Pitcher of the Week honors and he threw over six innings in seven games striking out a season-high 12 against UC Riverside while hitting 11 in two other contests.
