FRESNO, Calif. – Behind four players in double figures for the first time this season, Fresno State picked up its first Mountain West win of the year, defeating San Jose State, 64-51, on Saturday at the Save Mart Center. The win came after facing three of the league's top teams to open conference play.
With just one interior post player available due to injuries, Sydney Dethman had a breakout game, posting her first double-double as a Bulldog with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Twelve of the sophomore's points came in the second quarter (6-of-6) as the 'Dogs built up a double-digit lead that they held for much of the game.
Joining Dethman in double figures was Amaya West (17), Amiee Book (11) and Franka Wittenberg (10).
How It Happened
Knocking down three of their first five buckets of the opening quarter to lead 8-5, Fresno State missed its following seven as San Jose State grabbed its first lead of the afternoon. The 'Dogs regained their advantage connecting on four of its final five shots of the period to go up 16-11 after 10 minutes.
After a 3-pointer from the Spartans to open the second, Sydney Dethman scored the next eight straight for Fresno State, extending the lead to 24-16. The sophomore added four more in the quarter, shooting 6-of-6 in the frame. Her sixth bucket was followed by back-back field goals from Amaya West in the final 35 seconds put the 'Dogs up 39-26 at the half.
West added four more to start the third, giving Fresno State its largest lead of the game at 17. San Jose State began to whittle the lead down throughout the half, bringing it to single digits twice in the fourth quarter. Both times, the Bulldogs answered with a triple, first from Franka Wittenberg with 7:27 to play, and then again from Amiee Book with 1:50 remaining.

Following its lowest turnover output since 2018 on Thursday, Fresno State had its second single-digit turnover game of the season (9).
The Bulldogs won its eighth game when holding a team to single digits in a quarter (8-3).
Forcing 17 turnovers, Fresno State outscored San Jose State 14-2 in points off turnovers.
The 'Dogs held a 1.22 assist-to-turnover ratio (11-9), their second-highest ratio of the season.
