'Dogs fall at No. 11 UCLA

LOS ANGELES – Facing its first ranked opponent since 2016, Fresno State fell 82-48 at No. 11 UCLA on Tuesday night at Pauley Pavilion. Trailing by a 17 after three, the Bulldogs were outscored 16-3 over the final six minutes of the game.

Yanina Todorova led the 'Dogs in scoring with 13 while Imani Lacy scored 12 off the bench in her first game of the season. Charisma Osborne led UCLA with a game-high 16 while three freshmen from the Bruin's No. 1 recruiting class joined her in double figures.

How It Happened

Fresno State started out quick, grabbing a 6-2 lead through the opening four minutes. Turnovers began to plague the 'Dogs from that point. With two early, UCLA forced six more the during the remainder of the quarter which led to eight points. Fresno State connected just once more in the period, a 3-pointer from Yanina Todorova, her seventh point of the quarter but that was during a 15-3 Bruins run as they led 17-9 after one.

Trailing by 10 after UCLA scored on its opening possession of the second, a pair of 3's from Amiee Book and Amaya West sandwiched Imani Lacy's first points of the season during a 90-second 8-0 run. The two-point deficit was short-lived though as a turnover led to a layup from Charisma Osborne that started a 13-0 Bruin run which saw four turnovers lead to eight points for UCLA. Triples from Book and Lacy kept the deficit at the half to 15 as the 'Dogs trailed 40-25.

As UCLA built up its largest lead of the game at 25 late in the third, seven straight from the 'Dogs and a turnover forced the Bruins to call a timeout with the game at 56-38. The run continued to 10-0 before UCLA scored in the final seconds to make it 58-41 through 30 minutes. With the deficit at 23 with just over six minutes on the clock, back-to-back offensive rebounds and a bucket from Todorova led to to a quick timeout from UCLA. The Bruins came out and finished the final six minutes on a 16-3 run.

Notes

Associate Head Coach Mandi Carver made her third career appearance as acting head coach for the Bulldogs. It was her second in the last four days with head coach Jaime White out with Covid.

Against one of the top rebounding teams in the country, Fresno State was outrebounded 35-22. That led to a 17-4 difference in second-chance points.

The 'Dogs were forced into 23 turnovers leading to 30 points for the Bruins (30-17).

Yanina Todorova reached double figures for a team-high eighth game, scoring 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

Imani Lacy made her first appearance of the season, recording 12 points.

Keely Brown matched her season in the scoring column with seven points.

Sydney Dethman recorded a career-high three steals.

Next Up

Fresno State will be off until opening Mountain West play on Dec. 29 at Colorado State.
